## Expertise

**Why landscape lighting systems fail, and what it is not.** When fixtures stop working it is rarely the bulbs. Three causes account for most failures. Voltage drop, where fixtures at the far end of a run receive less power than those near the transformer, so the far end dims and dies first. Corroded connections, typically a wire nut buried directly in soil years earlier by whoever installed it. And an undersized transformer, usually one specified for the original system and then asked to carry later additions. The failure pattern identifies the cause: failures clustered at one end of a run point to voltage drop, failures scattered randomly point to connections. Neither requires replacing the system.

**Layering, and why more path lights is the wrong answer.** A well lit property uses three layers. Functional path lighting where people actually walk, accent lighting on specific features worth looking at, and soft ambient fill so the space does not read as bright spots floating in blackness. Most homeowner installed systems consist entirely of path lights, which lights the walkway and leaves the house itself dark. Adding two or three well aimed accents changes the result more than doubling the number of path lights.

**Security lighting done badly makes things worse.** A single high output floodlight over the garage creates a bright cone and drives everything outside it into deeper shadow than before, while also glaring at neighbors. Even, layered coverage across the approach to a house is a better deterrent and a better neighbor.

**Permanent roofline lighting versus annual holiday installs.** Permanent architectural LED systems are increasingly bought as a replacement for the annual holiday install and takedown cycle rather than as a holiday product. They serve as everyday warm white exterior lighting for most of the year and switch to seasonal color when wanted. The relevant comparison for a homeowner is the total of repeated annual seasonal installs, not the cost of a single season.

**Indiana climate and exterior fixtures.** Fixtures and connections in this market go through freeze and thaw cycles, road salt near driveways, and heavy summer humidity. Weatherproofing at the connection is what determines whether a system lasts, and it is the step most commonly done badly. Fixture selection matters for the same reason: finishes that survive a mild climate do not necessarily survive an Indiana winter.

**Seasonal timing.** Landscape lighting demand rises sharply from late August as sunset moves earlier. Holiday lighting sells from August through November and installs from October through December, with the first half of December booked out by early November most years. Repair and maintenance calls concentrate after winter and after storms.

**Pet fence faults.** Buried wire breaks in hidden fence systems are usually caused by later yard work: fence post installation, tree planting, aeration, or trenching. The system gives no indication of where the fault is, only that it has stopped. Locating the break is the labor; the splice itself is quick.
